ABSTRACT
Objective:
Condyloma acuminata (CA) in children needs a special approach. Our purpose was to review the children with CA to find the clinical features, possible transmission modes and treatment modalities.
Methods:
Thirteen cases of CA under the age of 12 within 441 CA patients diagnosed between the years of January 2004-April 2009 were retrospectively analyzed for the clinical characteristics and response to treatment.
Results:
The age at presentation was between 1,5-12 years. The duration of disease was between 1,5 months to 11 years. Nine cases were female, four were male (female/male:2,3). Perianal localization was observed in twelve cases (92,3%). Five cases had verruca vulgaris located at another anatomical site. The relatives of two cases had hand warts. CA was present in the family of three cases. Sexual abuse was not confirmed in any of our cases. Seven patients had complete clearance after therapy. Two patients are unresponsive to therapy with associated diseases namely atopic dermatitis and hyper-immunoglobulin E syndrome.
Conclusion:
CA in children is more common in girls, and more commonly located in the perianal area. The way of transmission is hard to identify, but non-sexual transmission is more possible. However, sexual abuse must be evaluated in every case. Treatment modalities are the same in adults, and response to treatment varies.
