ABSTRACT

Objective:

We aimed to determine age, gender, localization area and types of skin cancer cases admitted to our hospital.

Methods:

A total of 338 patients diagnosed as malignant skin tumor that were referred to Pathology Department of Tokat Government Hospital from dermatology, plastic surgery and general surgery departments between the years of 2007 and 2011 were included in the study. Malignant skin tumors were classified as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, basosquamous cell carcinoma and Kaposi’s sarcoma.

Results:

In this study 338 patients (60.7% males, 39.3% females) were evaluated. Of the cases, 95% were older than 50 years and the mean age was 67±11 years. Of the 338 malign tumors; 224 (66.2%) were basal cell carcinoma, 106 (31.3%) were squamous cell carcinoma, 2 (0.5%) were basosquamous cell carcinoma, 5 (1.4%) were malignant melanoma and 1 (0.3%) was Kaposi’s sarcoma. It was seen that the most common localization of skin tumors was head and neck region.

Conclusion:

In our study the most frequently seen skin cancer was basal cell carcinoma followed by squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, basosquamous cell carcinoma and Kaposi’s sarcoma. The tumors were mostly seen in head and neck region and their frequencies were increased by age. Results of this study are consistent with the results of various studies conducted in our country and international literature.
